VRC Update
Meet Sharon Clemo from Llandough Hospital in Wales. She has just
become registered as a Cytotechnologist with the VRC and is the
first cytology screener in Wales to be registered too.
Although the process of registering is laborious and time-consuming,
Sharon said it was well worth the effort and she is proud to be
a registered Cytotechnologist with the VRC showing commitment to
her profession.
Well done and congratulations Sharon!

EXECUTIVE CHANGES
Some major executive changes have occurred since the recent Annual
General Meeting of the Association.
Carole Cowen has retired, passing the baton of Presidential responsibility
over to Alison Baker. Alison Springall has left our ranks to pursue
a career with CPA and Andrew Evered and Tuesday Burlingham have
stood down for personal reasons. The Association owes a tremendous
debt of gratitude to each and every one of them for their respective
contributions and the hard work they have expended on behalf of
the members during their respective terms of office.
At the AGM two new executive members, Karen Charley (Brighton) and
Julie Thomas (Portsmouth), were welcomed onto the committee. Both
are cytology screeners dedicated to gaining the professional recognition
their work deserves. In fact Julie is the registrar for the Voluntary
Registration Council (VRC) and as such is a great addition to the
team.
Two positions remain vacant at this time and the closing date for
nominations to the executive has been extended to the 31st August.
Please
contact Mike Rowell should you wish to be considered
for election to the executive before the closing date.

Meet Karen Charley
New Executive Committee Member
17th July 2007
Hi everyone, I am one of the new recruits on the NAC Executive Committee.
I am a cytology screener at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in
Brighton and have been for 6 years. I am also the Health & Safety
Co-ordinator for our cytology department. Before I found the wonderful
world of cytology I worked as a care assistant in a nursing home.
In September I am going back to college part time to study for a
Health & Safety National Qualification.
Outside of work, my household is comprised of three children, a
husband and one very mad dog. Since having my youngest child just
over a year ago, I have reduced my hours to part time. I do not
have many hobbies or interests, as spare time barely exists in my
life but my idea of a good time and relaxation is a nice cup of
tea and a good soap.

VOLUNTARY REGISTRATION COUNCIL
17th July 2007
In 2003 NAC members voted overwhelmingly for the Executive committee
to act on their behalf in leading cytology screeners to statutory
regulation. Much has been achieved since then, including the establishment
of the VRC as a limited company, a complete overhaul of the training
framework for cytology screeners and the development of a professional
code of conduct and robust registration procedure.

New NAC Membership Secretary, Melanie Linham.
I have recently taken over from Alison Baker as membership secretary
of the Association. Please bear with me at this time as I am getting
to grips with the processes involved and trying to cope with the
renewals from April this year. I am therefore writing to both introduce
myself to you and to ask for your support and cooperation in checking
/ amending our records.
I am Deputy Cytology Manager (BMS 3) working in a busy cytology
department at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and have been a
member of the NAC Executive for the last two years.

Change Of Role For Committee
Members
27th March 2007
Carole Cowen retires as president of the Association on 1st April
and will pass the baton onto Alison Baker. Melanie Linham has taken
over as membership secretary. Alison Springall has left the NAC
executive committee as her new post prohibits her from continuing
under the rules of the constitution. Her role as Chair has been
taken on by Andrew Evered, and that of General Secretary has been
filled by Mike Rowell.
The NAC Executive would like to take this opportunity to thank
Alison Springall on behalf of its members for all her hard work
and support over the years and wish her all the best in her new
role.
This still leaves two vacancies on the committee. If you know of
anyone who could fill these places then please complete the nomination
form which will be included in the next issue of SCAN.
